Accomplishing The Perfect Tan

By Amanda Cohen on June 18, 2016

With the rising temperatures of summer comes the lessening of clothing worn. In the winter, you were able to hide behind baggy sweatshirts, jeans, leggings, and long-sleeved shirts, but it’s summer now and it’s time to store away your gloves and hats and trade them for shorts and bikinis.

As you pull up your white denim shorts, you cringe because you and your shorts share the same complexion. If you have no time to sit out in the sun and/or you just simply hate tanning, please read on. I am here to share some secret ways to get the bronzed summer glow.

Bondi Sands Self Tanning Foam

You know how everybody always says that Australians are either beautiful or handsome? Well, their reputation is definitely bolstered by their luscious dark skin. I bet money that many Australians (as well as Americans) use Bondi Sands Self Tanning Foam when preparing for swimsuit season.

Using this product is quite simple. All you have to do is use the mitt that they sell on their website and apply one to three pumps of foam to each sectioned area of your body. My friends and I usually use two pumps, but depending on your height, original complexion, and desired results, you might want to do less or more.

Just make sure to apply an even amount to every part of your body so that you don’t look streaky. Also, just a side note, don’t over apply … you don’t want to shower the next day and look in the mirror only to see an Oompa Loompa staring back at you!

St. Tropez Self Tan Classic Bronzing Mousse

If you want to look like you hail from the beautiful beaches of the South of France, look no further: St. Tropez Self Tan Classic Bronzing Mousse is the right product for you (how could it not be, it says St. Tropez in the name)! Similarly to the Bondi Sands product, you simply use one to three pumps in each sectioned area of your body, applying the mousse with the mitt provided.

Now, what is the main difference between Bondi Sands and St. Tropez? The first difference is that the Bondi Sands provides a less natural look (a little more orange) while St. Tropez goes for a more classic bronzed tone. The second difference is that Bondi Sands is Australian and St. Tropez is not (huge game changer). Some people prefer using St. Tropez if their skin is a little more sensitive, but in the end it’s all about personal preference.

Tan Towel Full Body Plus Self-Tan Towelettes

The Tan Towel Full Body Plus Self-Tan Towelettes are a fairly new product on the tanning market that have quickly climbed their way to fame. The beauty of the Tan Towel is that all you have to do is rip open the box and rub the towelette on your body as you would with an exfoliator.

Tan Towel products are perfect if you are going on vacation and want just a simple base-coat to get your tan started. They are also perfect if you are attempting to even out your racer-back tank-top tan with the rest of your body. The final tan itself will last on your body for about a week or so, and will gradually come off in the shower.

Think of Tan Towel Towelettes as Wet Wipes for your entire body … except for the fact that they don’t kill bacteria and they make your skin glow.

Spray Tan

If you are worried about doing your own tan at home because you don’t want your skin to look uneven, you always have the option to go pay someone to do a spray tan for you. There are two types of spray tans; one type has you stand in a machine and get sprayed while the other has a person airbrush you in tanner.

The best part about going to a place to get a spray tan is that you have a variety of complexion options as well as experts who can help you choose a color that is suiting to your body and skin tone. Yes, it can be pricey at times, which is why I would save this option for special events, rather than just for everyday appearance. (Note: spray tans are completely different than tanning beds. Tanning beds are extremely bad for you and you should never use them).

Even though all of these products are fantastic, I suggest that you take advantage of the summer sun and go outside for a little bit (wearing sunscreen of course). Also remember that you are beautiful no matter how tan or fair-skinned you are; there is no such thing as the perfect complexion! The most important aspects about tanning are to use products that are safe for you and to protect your skin from aggressive sun rays! Happy tanning everyone!
